joomlaHowToFacebookOne of my passions is sharing Joomla how-to tips on Youtube and in this Joomla blog. It occured to me that I should also share them on Facebook. I entered the word Joomla in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and found that monthly over a million people in the US are searching for "joomla how to" in Google, and over 13 million are searching for it globally. So I created a new Facebook page called Joomla! How To. As I upload new tutorials, I will add them to this page. I'll be curious to see if searches for Joomla How-To lead people to this Facebook presence. I also changed my blog name from Joomla Tips to Joomla How-To.

My favorite web marketer John Jantsch is offering a summary of his approach in a free ebook if you sign up for his newsletter. I say go for it! http://www.ducttapemarketing.com/subscribe

If you need a good laugh while you wrap your mind around the pros and cons of Google+, watch this  video from the epipheo youtube channel. I played this Google + video for the after-hours crowd at my last SCORE web marketeing presentation. We all cracked up. I'm sure many of you will relate.

If you're like me, you don't spend as much time on Facebook as you should to stay engaged with your clients and prospects. When you're running your own business, or even if you aren't, who has time?

Instead of going to Facebook, what if Facebook could come to you?

The Duct Tape Marketing system is the BEST. They just gave me a GREAT free phone session including a comprehensive web audit. You can do it too! You have to fill out a form that is a little intimidating, but it's so worth it. Just filling out the form will help you think about your marketing needs. I worked with Kelly Weppler, who was fabulous. When you follow this link, you can select her name from the bottom of the drop-down menu of coaches.

Do you ever get frustrated when you get a big image and you want to email it or upload it to your blog or website? This short video demonstrates how to use the free online service called Image Optimizer. It's truly a breeze!

A good domain name can be the quickest way to get placement in search results. When people who have never heard of you search in Google for the type of product or service you sell, you want your domain name to help you show up high in the results. It's common for businesses to use their business name as their domain name. There's nothing wrong with that. But if your business name doesn't match the searches people make, you probably need an additional domain name.

Free software called Firesheep lets just about anyone sitting next to you at your local coffee shop watch you browse the Web and even assume your identity online. You're safe if the sites you're watching, or logged into are secure (https) sites. That's not the norm, unfortunately. I have resorted to tethering my iPhone with a USB cable to my laptop and using the phone's internet connection. It works surprisingly well. Maybe other smart phones can do this. If you're using Firefox browser, you can download Blacksheep for free which can detect the presence of Firesheep on the network and give you a warning. Anyway, as they said back in the day on Hill Street Blues, be safe out there!

Recently I posted a question in a discussion forum about one of the extensions I use in my Joomla website. This forum lets users create a signature for all their posts, including their web address, so I did that. Now, every time I post to that forum, I get a back-link to my web site. This is good!

It may be time to expand just a little out of your web comfort zone. This step will help you engage in conversations in a way that will bring qualified clients to your digital door by finding people who are already interested in the type of product or service you offer.

Let's pretend you offer pottery workshops in Santa Fe. Maybe you discovered that 33,000 people a month are searching for "pottery classes" (which I just found out for free by putting the word "pottery" in the Google Adwords Keyword Tool).

It's easy to be notified when bloggers or discussion groups talk about pottery. Go to www.google.com/alerts and type the word "pottery" in the text field. Choose the type "discussions" and select how often you want to be notified. Leave the "only the best results" selection as-is. Enter your email address. Click on CREATE ALERT. Repeat this step and choose "blog" in the type dropdown.

You will get email alerts whenever people blog about or engage in discussions about pottery. When you get the alerts, follow the links and see if you are interested in the sites. If so, see if you can make a comment or engage in a discussion. You may have to register a username and password. You may be able to enter your web address in a profile or a signature. Do it! These are the venues that will help you the most.

Well, I'm bummed. I like the way GoDaddy works as a rule. I love their control panel interface. They are the easiest registrar I've ever dealt with. But I just realized that you can do a WHOIS search on their site in a way that does nothing to protect the privacy of domain name owners. A WHOIS search basically tells you the details of the owner of any given domain. Most sites that offer a WHOIS search function force you to use a captcha form where you type those squiggly characters. This is great because it prevents robots and spiders from filling out the form and gleaning private information for spamming purposes.

I used to think that ALL WHOIS search functions used captcha forms, but GoDaddy doesn't. Of course, if the owner of a domain has purchased "privacy" for their domain, then the personal information is not revealed even with the captcha form. But now that some companies like GoDaddy are releasing this information without captcha protection, we all HAVE to purchase privacy: just one more thing we have to pay for to try and stay ahead of hackers and spammers. I'm disappointed in GoDaddy.
